We are thrilled to launch a new A List venture: a podcast called Travelling Blind – Seeing the World with a Disability.

Our Autistic ambassador, Sam Valavanis, has been working tirelessly to bring this project to life. The podcast explores Sam’s deep love of travel and the ways he navigates the world while living with a disability, sharing both the practical realities and the emotional journey behind his adventures.

In the first two episodes, Sam speaks with his parents about one of the most difficult decisions their family ever faced: the removal of his eyes in early childhood to save his life from cancer. Sam reflects on the years his parents fought to preserve his sight for as long as possible, until his second eye was removed at the age of four. He shares his gratitude for the courage and care they showed throughout that process, and the love that guided every choice they made.

Sam’s Journey

Growing up, Sam faced challenges that would have been overwhelming for many. Yet, with his family by his side, each obstacle was met with determination and heart.

After moving through the very real emotions of grief, fear, and anger, Sam and his family made a conscious decision to focus on what he could do, rather than what he could not. That shift in perspective became a turning point. It became clear that Sam was not going to be limited by his circumstances. In fact, he was going to experience life with an enthusiasm and depth that inspired everyone around him.

A Love of Travel and Independence

Sam discovered a deep love for travel, particularly trains, but even more so, he discovered a passion for independence and adventure.

He now travels solo throughout Melbourne and has explored many places with his family. His dream is to continue building a life filled with new experiences, while also advocating for greater access and inclusion for people with disability in travel and public spaces.

Supporting a Powerful Voice

The A List is proud to support Sam and his podcast, as well as his dream of becoming a radio host. It is a privilege to stand behind someone whose energy, determination, and creativity are as powerful as his message.

Travelling Blind – Seeing the World with a Disability is not just a podcast about travel. It is about resilience, curiosity, family, and the right to experience the world fully, regardless of disability.
